Sexual preference is expressed negatively

I recently realised that the words we use to describe sexual preference, heterosexual and homosexual (as well as their slang counterparts straight, gay and lesbian), are not positive statements, but negative ones. They define what we don’t like and not what we like.

You might think that heterosexual means, “attracted to the oposite sex”, but then, bisexuals would be heterosexual too. See the problem? Heterosexual means really “not attracted to the same sex”.

I realised because if you ask me whether I’m gay I can easily answer: “No, I’m not gay, I like women”. If you ask me whether I’m straight, I’m not comfortable saying “Yes, I’m straight. There’s no way I can ever like this half of the population. It’s impossible for me to be attracted to any of these 3500 million individuals”.
